How Compound Interest Works
Compound interest allows returns earned on an investment to become part of the balance that can generate additional returns in future periods. Over longer periods, this compounding effect can have a significant impact on the future value of savings and investments.
This calculator allows you to enter either an annual interest rate or a monthly interest rate. When a monthly rate is selected, the entered percentage is applied during each monthly calculation period.
You can also add a monthly contribution. This allows the calculator to estimate the effect of adding money regularly while the existing balance continues to earn interest.
The results are estimates for planning and comparison purposes. Actual returns may differ because of investment performance, fees, taxes, inflation, withdrawals, contribution timing, and other factors.
Compound Interest Calculator FAQs
Can I use a monthly interest rate?
Yes. Select Monthly Interest Rate and enter the percentage that applies to each month. The calculator will use that monthly rate when calculating interest and future balances.
Can I use an annual interest rate?
Yes. Select Annual Interest Rate and enter the expected annual rate. The calculator uses the selected compounding frequency to calculate periodic growth.
What is monthly interest?
Monthly interest is the amount of interest generated during one month based on the applicable rate and investment balance. Because the balance can grow after each interest calculation, future monthly interest may also increase.
Does monthly investing increase compound growth?
Regular contributions can increase the final value because each contribution adds to the amount available for future growth.
Is 1% monthly interest the same as 12% annual interest?
Not necessarily. If 1% is compounded every month, the effective annual growth rate is higher than 12% because interest is itself compounded during the year.
Are the results guaranteed?
No. The calculator provides mathematical estimates based on the assumptions entered. Actual investment results may be different.
