What makes a useful meta description?

A meta description can act as a short invitation to explore a webpage. It should describe the page honestly while giving a searcher a reason to consider the result.

- Explain what the page actually provides.

- Include important terminology naturally.

- Write for people rather than stuffing phrases into the text.

- Avoid copying the same description across many unrelated pages.

- Make the wording consistent with the page title and content.

How long should a meta description be?

Many SEO practitioners use approximately 120–160 characters as a practical target for ordinary pages. However, search engines can truncate, rewrite, or replace descriptions depending on the search query and other circumstances. There is therefore no single character count that guarantees a particular search-result display.

A description is not a ranking shortcut

Improving a description does not by itself guarantee higher rankings. Its main value is helping communicate the page's purpose and potentially improving how attractive and relevant the result appears to searchers.

Common questions

Is 160 characters a strict limit?

No. It is a commonly used guideline rather than a fixed search-engine rule. The visible result can change depending on context.

Should the primary keyword be included?

If it naturally describes the page, including the main topic can make the description clearer. Avoid forcing a keyword simply to increase repetition.

Can every page use the same description?

It is generally better to create descriptions that accurately reflect the individual content and purpose of each important page.
